The Room – 2019 Review © 2020 Dan's Movie Report – Danny Templegod

Greetings valued Dan's Movie Report readers and lovers of very odd thriller films. Although 'The Room' came out in 2019, the service Shudder, has it now for streaming and I thought during these crazy times, what else could I possibly do than watch this off the wall flick. 'The Room' is at the core a film about dreams. A young, well relatively young, couple buy a fixer upper home to start a new life together.

The couple, Matt played by Kevin Janssens and Kate played by Olga Kurylenko are cautiously optimistic when they purchase their new home in a lovely countryside. Once settled in, they stumble across an unusual room. This room is a seeming gateway to endless wishes, and boundless wealth. All is not what it seems as the couple wishes for more and more outlandish items, including million dollars and priceless artwork, sadly once these items leave the house, they turn to dust.

I mean the plot concept is pretty amazing, but some of the execution is a bit flat, I wanted to see more of the couple's lives prior to getting in the house and some more day to day interplay. That said, I did enjoy the acting of Kevin and Olga, both actors had to really go through a serious amount of emotions. Anger, fear, frustration and Olga's uncanny motherly power comes to fruition in the third act of 'The Room'. Olga straddled the line of mother and protector, while Kevin Jame's Matt came across as a man descending into madness as the time in the house wears on.

The big wish, and I will say (SPOILER) is the couple wishes for the one thing they cannot have, a child, although I refuse to spoil what happens after they get this star/miracle baby, I will say you will not see this coming. The plot thickens and even becomes delightfully convoluted and confusing. Normally I would hate this, but in 'The Room' it works. The pacing becomes frantic, rules are broken and nothing is conventional, and Olga proves she deserves to be in these high quality acting films not just action flicks like Bond, Centurion, and The Courier.

I actually watched 'The Room' a second time to see what director Christian Volckman wanted to do from the original Idea he had to the collaboration of other writers. I mean there are some great ideas here, I kind of wish the team had a bit of a higher budget for the house, but, the film works as basically a single setting entity save for an insane asylum of a John Doe, who apparently lived in the house prior.

Overall I will recommend this film especially on the Shudder streaming service, and rate it a strong 7 out of 10! If you have Amazon Prime it is a 4.99 monthly add on. Either that or go to https://www.shudder.com/

Volturian - Crimson CD Review (C) 2020 Dan's Movie Report - Danny Templegod

Greetings valued Dan's Movie Report readers, today the movie report turns into the music report! Across the music world April 24^th released a brand new sonic blast from Italy! Vollturian's debut CD entitled 'Crimson' has dropped like shooting star in the Italian Countryside. Lead singer Federica Lanna merges her vocal prowess with the amazing Federico Mondelli and members of Frozen Crown to merge styles and create an anthemic power rock release. Frederica's band Sleeping Romance is a bit more mellow, and Frozen Crown is heavier where as Volturian is right in the middle, more soaring vocals sounding like Amaranthe yet diverse enough leaning more on the rock side.

The 10 track CD comes in at under 36 minutes, a bit short, but the tunes are quite catchy and have memorable hooks. 'Haunting Symphony' is a rousing power gallop tune with some serious drums with an Iron Maiden music feel and Nightwish undertones. Good stuff! The single 'Broken' which was their first video actually recorded separately during Quarantine has a power metal opening yet comes in soft in the opening verse, flowing like water. Federica really has some nice tonal qualities and Federico's aggressive yet melodic screams in the background add the necessary punch to the music. Watch for a cameo vocal blast from the lead singer of Frozen Crown, Giada Jade Etro. Really enjoy her and Frederica together, a nice added touch to an already amazing release.

I recommend using headphones, the music has punch and depth. Listen to it loud and clean! Since the entire CD is just over 30 minutes, best is to listen to the whole disc in order all at once, before picking out your favorite tracks to listen over and over.

Villain (2020) Movie Review (C) 2020 Dan's Movie Report (Danny Templegod)

Greetings valued Dan's Movie Report readers. Across my desk today comes 'Villain' a rather angry movie from Saban Films. The synopsis is actually a great description of the film: After being released from prison, ex-con Eddie Franks (Craig Fairbrass) the actor was also in Avengement, wants nothing more than to start a new life.  However, his dreams of normalcy are tested when he learns of his brother's dangerous debt to a menacing drug lord.  To protect his family, Eddie is forced to go back to his former life of crime and learns that stepping back into this world can have devastating consequences in this action-packed thriller.

Essentially 'Villain' is a crime drama, but more of an emotional coming home story. The film opens with Eddie Franks, deftly portrayed by Craig Fairbrass being released from jail. He comes home to find out his little brother is deep in debt to some dangerous people, and has to try to make things right. Incidentally the mode during the film is somber and somewhat depressing, an ominous telling of what is to come, no spoilers!

Eddie settles in and locates some of his old stash of cash, and attempts to live a normal life, in villain, however not much is normal. His brother is strung out on drugs and unstable, his brother's girlfriend, is hard to handle and lazy, ha but of the 3 has her head together the most, finally his daughter a plot development that is very prominent in the latter half of the film.

The action is brutal when it happens, that said Villain is not wall to wall action, there is enough dialogue to tell a story. My only complaint is the way Craig Fairbrass speaks is very quietly, almost whispering the lines ala 'Taken' . Actually the film reminds me a mix of 'Taken' and 'Falling Down'

As much as I love action, I really enjoyed the interplay Eddie has with his daughter Chloe, portrayed by Izuka Hoyle. The acting is really at a high level during a particular scene involving his grand child. That is a trap many action movies fall into not enough character development and dialogue between actors to set up the aggression.

Small issues I had were with the quiet and often mumbled dialogue. I am sure part of it was character, but again, I needed to hear what they are saying, that said when Izuka spoke she spoke clearly, and forcefully. Again this is minor compared to the overall scheme of 'Villain'. Some of the film was a bit grainy at parts, again probably due to the atmosphere director Phillip Barantini was trying to create.

Speaking of director Barantini, credit is due to the actors showing solid emotion during their scenes, obviously he took some time to set up the mood of 'Villain' When Eddie's brother's girlfriend is getting flirty and crazy the look in her eyes is proper! Izuka Hoyle really has to run an emotional roller coaster, and the combination of her acting skills, and this level of direction really made her character pop out on screen.

Hard to tell what the budget was on this but I am thinking since there were not many big sequences it may have been a bit lower than I initially thought. 'Villain' though delivers on a strong third act and really gets emotional. The build up is well worth the payoff.

Overall, I liked 'Villain', actually would have like it to be 10 minutes longer to learn more about the bad guys trying to harm Eddie and his brother, that said, the film rates a solid 7 out of 10. I recommend renting 'Villain' or even buying it if one enjoys British crime action and drama.
