Secret Society of Second Born Royals - Movie Review (C) 2020 Dan's Movie Report - Danny Templegod

Above Image copyright 2020 Disney+, used for promotional purposes only.

Greetings valued Dan's Movie Report and Action-Flix.com readers. Disney+ has begun to really up their content, there I said it. With all of the Marvel Products and Star Wars stories under their belt, it is nice to see an original movie, not directly related to those properties on the service. Secret Society pf the Second Born Royals creates a new realm, yet burrows from many old themes. Disney probably is aiming this film at more of the 11 to 15 year old market.

For the purposes of the review I will refer to the film as Second Born Royals, in fact at one point in the film a character makes a joke about the name being too long hah. Subtle humor yet dealing with very serious issues as in one character is contemplating suicide.

Essentially what we have here is a coming of age story, with superpowers, think X-Men: First Class, yet the back story is slightly different, they are already outcasts in their families because they caused harm to others with powers they did not know they had. One character caused a fire to kill many people in the mine where he and his father worked. Some others have their powers revealed later in the film.

All of the subjects in the institution go through constant monitoring, and are seemingly tried to be reintegrated into society, yet something sinister is going on in the big picture. Second Born Royals assumes there are 'good mutants' already living in the world and these kids need their skills honed.

Many cultures are explored, which thankfully is the norm in 2020. A particular Native American character has nightmares and psyonic energy and visions of many things from powerful storms to a giant bear, no spoilers it all ties together in the end.

No secret here, the main reason I watched this one was Elodie Yung, she takes on the motherly role of queen, and (Spoiler) the leader of The Secret Society of Second Born Royals! After her brutal take as Elektra, Elodie, who is a new mom herself steps into a leadership and mentor ship role. I enjoyed her character, just wish more screen time was given as a build up to her reveal as the leader, Queen Cathrine.

I was wondering if Second Born Royals would work better as a 8 episode series, thus allowing more explanation and backstory. Disney movies, by their nature are inherently short for the most part, at 90 minutes Second Born Royals rushes through the characters back story, yes the original X-Men film 21 years ago is short, but we saw a pretty solid back story of Magneto and Rogue, plus being that they are already comics, people that read the comics know the characters. Director Anna Mastro who also serves as one of the Executive Producers discusses the possibility of sequels with Collider @ https://collider.com/secret-society-of-second-born-royals-2-sequels-director-anna-mastro-interview/

On to the action, Second Born Royals has a style melding mental powers and physical fighting, one character has a super-powered arm and wields it not unlike Psylocke of the X-Men. It is PG rated so nothing too crazy, but some pretty cool stunts. Again these are kids just learning their power, yet it does get more aggressive towards the end. The amazing Matt Mullins is one of the stunt coordinators, his work is legendary, having coordinated The Defenders series and season 2 of Luke Cage. The ultra talented Alicia Turner, who has worked on various projects ranging from the new Nancy Drew show, back to Nikita brings a wealth of knowledge to the young stars, building up their confidence in action! Again #StandupforStunts! Kudos and credit to Variety for their article on the stunts! Nice to see stunt professionals having an article in a well read and respected magazine! https://collider.com/secret-society-of-second-born-royals-2-sequels-director-anna-mastro-interview/

The lighting, camera work, sets and CGI are all very good and up to Disney standards. The budget is not 200 mil so expect a slightly lower tier, would have been nice to see this on a theater screen. The music fits the movie, ramping up the tension and anxiety towards the end.

Is the story original, not really which may be a bit off putting, as it burrows several elements from many other films and shows, yet intrinsically the film has a quality that is enjoyable. Now many services are creating their own properties like Amazon's The Boys and Netflix'a Umbrella Academy which are both squarely aimed at adults, Disney at least in the USA seems to adhere to children first policy yet overseas has dipped their hand at releasing or distributing R rated content. That is their niche, the happiest place on Earth, in Second Born Royals, many things are not so happy haha!

Even though I wanted more back story and length, the acting from the young stars is pretty good and kind of hope for a second film. Elodie needs her moment to get into the action, not just look amazing in sexy and regal outfits giving sage advice! Secret Society of Second Born Royals rates a 7 out of 10.

Secret Society of Second Born Royals is now streaming on Disney+ at no additional charge.

V-Force Movie Unleashes A fantasy Action Trailer! (C) 2020 Dan's Movie Report - Danny Templegod

Above: Don Wilson and Juju Chan in V-Force

Greetings valued Dan's Movie Report and Action-Flix.com readers, was checking my Facebook this morning and Actor Don Wilson posted a trailer to the movie he worked on a few years back called V-Force. http://dansmoviereport.blogspot.com/2016/08/v-force-new-dawn-of-victory-behind.html

The movie was shot in in early 2016. I spoke to Don about it a couple of years ago, he was unsure, I tried to find out about it as well.

 Above: V-Force trailer (C) 2020 Fantastic Entertainment

Don had this to say on his Facebook Page: “I met Billy Zane in Sean Penn's house in Malibu many years ago. Later, he would work in a Roger Corman film at the Production Studio in Venice, California. I stopped by his trailer and said, hello. Again, "many years later", we would work together in this fun 'All Girl Super Hero Movie", "V Force"! I was asked to appear in just a couple of scenes as a "cameo". He was perfect as "the mad scientist" and he had his "monsters" kill me at the end of my scene. Well, I can't complain because every time I work with friends in my films, they end up dying too! “

JuJu mentioned to me that the movie could end up on the sci-fi channel. We shall see. I will reach out to the production team this month to see the status! V-Force is directed by Frank E Johnson https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0425100/?ref_=tt_ov_dr

Frank is an amazing talent and has worked on a variety of shows including the A-Team and Walker Texas Ranger.

Essentially V-Force is a sci-fi action film with robots, supreme fighters, wraiths, fighting a special force of ladies. The movie was shot in Portland, Oregon. I recommended JuJu Chan to be on the project and she was cast along many stars such as Billy Zane, Keith David, and Bruce Dern. Curious to learn more!

Redemption (2020) Short Film - Movie Review (C) 2020 Dan's Movie Report - Danny Templegod

Greetings valued Dan's Movie Report and Action-Flix.com readers, across my desk today comes a short action film called Redemption. The 11 Minute blast really levels up the quality of what a short action film can be. With the film being shot in the same final fight location as Triple Threat, Redemption is virtually forced to have a higher standard. For me as a viewer, I hat to watch on my biggest TV, and I was transported into a climactic scene or opening scene of an action movie.Actor's Ron Smoorenburg and actor Neonat Wiangyangkung shine in action, with speed and timing worthy of a theater movie.

Stephen Renney serves as director, fight choreographer, and editor. Mr Renney really brought his A game and here is hope that this short film is just a taste of what is to come. The look and feel of the movie is bigger than your average short film. The final fight location is large enough to show scope but intimate enough to allow for you guessed it, amazing camera work! Niccolò De La Fere serves as cinematographer getting the angles just right, I noticed that stunt action specialist Tanja Keller serves as 1st AD and this is good as she can bounce ideas off and have a perspective.

Most importantly, Redemption represents the results of a collaborative effort, a team of skilled people looking to better their film making craft and strengthen their action prowess. Redemption is expertly shot and the music and sound boom with the undulating power of a AR-15. The musical score credit goes to composer Roman Molino Dunn from Mirrortone. Class film and so far, my top short film of the year, yeah it is that good and rates 9.5 out of 10.

The entire film is on YouTube along with a full cast and crew list @

Thriller Mayday 2 Takes Flight! You Can Be a Part of the Action! (C) Dan's Movie Report - Danny Templegod

Greetings valued Dan's Movie Report and Action-Flix.com readers. Recently director Massimiliano Cerchi reached out and told me that a sequel to his first Mayday film which was distributed by Lionsgate is happening. https://dansmoviereport.blogspot.com/2019/09/mayday-2019-movie-review.html

Mayday is not only being developed, but is well on it's way to begin pre-production soon. Cerchi has made me aware that lead actor Michael Paré will return in the same capacity. In addition, look for Bai Ling and Tara Reid to be involved. As fans we can be involved directly! I am normally very apprehensive of Indigogo campaigns as there is no threshold and no assurance the project will be made. This is exactly the opposite, the first film sold well Cerchi told me. Cerchi gets films made and keeps his word! Credit to Horror-Flix.com as well for their inclusion of actor Robert Lasardo please check out their article as well. https://www.horror-fix.com/tara-reid-robert-lasardo-more-join-the-cast-of-mayday-2/

With the addition of Bai and Tara to the cast, indie film fans have something to support and in turn get various perks and promotional items from the movie. Check out the hat and mug below!

Haphazard (2019) Movie Review (C) 2020 Dan's Movie Report - Danny Templegod

Above: Poster from IMDB (Green Apple Distribution)

Greetings valued Dan's Movie Report and Action-Flix.com readers I decided to purchase the Amazon release of Haphazard. One of the beautiful things of buying a movie, is the indie people are supported directly and secondly the opinions are more realistic, thus no agenda. I have interviewed several people in this film prior Ron Smoorenburg. Selina Lo, Byron Gibson and Dean Alexandrou. My relationship with them will not have a bearing on my review, yet I have some strong opinions, positive and negative.

Haphazard begins with a fight, then a narration by Selina Lo, discussing the story about how she met a man name the Pilgrim. There is a slick opening montage.

A recon satellite was shot down or crashed, but we never see it shot down just hear about it but we are shown a room where it is being monitored. Then the film cuts to a fire dance in which the signal is active for the secret hard drive contained. Nrox 42 satellite contents needs to be recovered. The next 80 minutes are comprised of several parties going for the hard drive, Dean Alexandrou creates a rather intricate yet simple plot at the same time. Hard to explain, but I got more out of this film upon second viewing.

The genre is action, yet the humor interspersed makes the film seem more light hearted. Smoorenburg's character Ronnie, just is non stop flirtatious and inappropriate comments, kind of funny yet Selina Lo's Siren gets the best lines. “If this was a real fight I would have taken a fork and shoved it through your eye socket” The best line is when a guy who hit her motorcycle and knocked her off and asked her want me to call an ambulance, and she calmly says “You're gonna need one!”Whoa, Selina calm the hell down, I told her in a direct message you looked adorable in the movie and she said “I was going for fierce, but I will take adorable hah!” Selina has a pretty amazing double sword action fight later in the film. Watch for a 2021 interview after Boss Level comes out.

Look for Byron Gibson and Damon Whitaker in supporting roles they are both excellent of course, very natural actors. The acting overal is good with the main characters, but some of the side characters not so much.

The movie flow is a minor issue there is downtime and story development then a bunch of fights at the end. The final fights are extensive and I would have liked to see a cut away to some sort of plot development, yet the stories were explored earlier in the film.

Actress and stunt specialist Tanja Keller has a great fight with Dean on a boat and in short, I loved the fight, did not enjoy the camera work, angles and distance, I wanted to see some close ups not drone nor shaky type of camera. I realize the boat itself is the problem, but the fight lacked some of the impact.

There is a Russian agent who dresses in silly costume, and her acting is really bad and forced, I mean if that was the character, I was just annoyed by it. I feel that she kind of was not needed or could have been a voice on the phone.

Being this is an indie film, the sound track itself is good but in headphones, the recording is hollow and tinny and I have tried several brands of headphones that I own in ear and over the ear and was like, how come the thin sound.

The original music composed for the film is great on Hollow Point and fits each part.  Composer Nicholas Rivera takes his time going over each scene to set the mood and tone. The fight sequences have a undulating, tense tone, while the quieter parts seem to blend with serenity allowing the viewer to breathe between action. Nicholas is amazing and deserves to be considered among the greats in film composing, as he enjoys his work and feels the passion of the stories he scores.

The video editing and transitions are pretty good and keeps the movie a tight 90 minutes, some scenes are really well lit and there is a massive fight in a private club where it was so dark the action was hard to see. I wanted to see it.

One briefcase so many people want it, yet the urgency of the film is chilled pace except when Dean is doing some free running chasing, then it picks up to frantic. Actually Dean did a film called Dohard that has a similar type of chase and Selina using double swords.

Selina Lo is the Haphazard highlight with Dean's energetic fighting skill close behind. Dean is an upcoming film maker and the quality is improving wish each production, I also reviewed Time Rush as well. The amazing Daniel Zirilli is listed as one of the producers in Haphazad, always collaborating he is, wanting to build people up.

Finally, what more can be said about the stunts, Charlie Ruedpokanon leads a masterful group of stunt performers and the result is epic action. The action is tense, artful and copious!

I would say for $1.99 for a rental and $7.99 for purchase, Haphazard, even with the flaws is worthy of a buy and rates a 7 out of 10, initially I was going to do 6 out of 10 but a second watching and Selina Lo leaving people broken all the while looking great was refreshingly entertaining! I hope there is a DVD eventually, I still enjoy physical copies.
