Paradise Movie Review

I know it is nearing Halloween, but time for an odd, irreverent Diablo Cody dark comedy called Paradise. Julianne Hough portrays a young woman named Lamb who was in a horrible plane crash, burned over most of her body. She is cared  for by her strict mother played for by Holly Hunter. Her mother is a church going bible thumper, and instead of Julianne Hough appeasing her mother, she gets up to the church lectern after the year it took to partly recover, and not only renounces god, she describes all the gory details of her crash and finally exclaims : "In the next presidential election I may vote democrat!" Holy hell that clears the room, and those who are left gasp and look mortified.

After the huge settlement she is off to the land of sin, meeting up with the odd characters in Vegas. Russel Brand the bartender, a cool reunite from Rock of Ages. Russel Brand is made up to look like Jesus, but has a far different message. He is hysterical and caring at the same time to Lamb.

One of the cool things in Paradise, is how Julianne has matured as an actress. I worked as an extra on Rock of Ages, spending hours by the stage where Julianne was singing with Tom Cruise. Julianne is a hard worker and gracious performer. In Paradise, she is given many lines to chew on, a challenge she seems to enjoy, with her sense of humor. Obviously having Holly Hunter on set is a huge boost for Julianne's acting chops, like a teacher, and yeah they are believable as mother and daughter. For the comedy, Russel Brand and Julianne have a solid on screen chemistry during their many scenes together. julianne has mastered the art of voice inflection and worked hard on her comedic timing. Hope to see her do more films like this in the future.

What evolves when the story shifts from a small town Montana is a quirky story, fun, tragic, yet surprisingly warm. Stereotypes are shattered, prepare to be offended! No issues or stones, or bibles are left un-desecrated by the trash mouthed characters with a heart! Lamb makes sure all the sins are covered she even crosses off public urination. Russel Brand's William character guides her like a circus ringmaster! That is the real highlight of the Paradise, their scenes together

The third pillar in the group is an African American lounge singer named Loray played by    who is trying to be her rock and advise her on the pitfalls of Vegas, specifically Paradise, Nevada. She is rolling around as the third wheel with a heart. Octavia has good style and presence in Paradise

The journey, the ride, and conclusion to Paradise are all thought provoking, The film is a fun and sad 90 minute ride, an eye opening journey to adulthood as much as coping with tragedy.  Paradise is a sardonic, sweet, yet mellow, and entertaining ride. I rate the film a must own, 9 out of 10!

The movie is available now on Amazon, click link below!

Tribeca Film Acquires U.S. Rights to 'Some Velvet Morning' with Alice Eve and Stanley Tucci!

Above Pic: Alice Eve and Stanley Tucci in 'Some Velvet Morning'

New York, NY – October 2, 2013 – Tribeca Film today announced it has acquired all U.S. rights to Neil LaBute’s enigmatic relationship drama Some Velvet Morning  starring Academy Award® nominee Stanley Tucci and Alice Eve. The film, written and directed by LaBute and produced by Tim Harms, Daryl Freimark, Michael Corrente, Trent Othick, and David Zander, had its World Premiere at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival and will be released theatrically and via on-demand platforms this winter.

Some Velvet Morning introduces us to Fred (Stanley Tucci) who arrives at the doorstep of his beautiful young mistress Velvet (Alice Eve) after four years apart, claiming to have finally left his wife. But when she rejects his attempts to rekindle their romance, his persistence evolves into obsession — and a dark history between the former lovers comes into focus. A return to form for writer/director Neil LaBute (In the Company of Men, Your Friends and Neighbors), Some Velvet Morning is an astutely written portrait of a very modern romance. Tucci and Eve’s nuanced and complex performances, paired with LaBute’s wordplay, create an intriguing drama. The stunning finale “doubles-down, then kicks you in the stomach as you lay on the carpet” ( and is “full of intelligent and witty twists and turns” (ScreenDaily).

“LaBute has a brilliant and unorthodox approach to filmmaking that captivates audiences, incites reactions and sparks dialogue,” said Geoff Gilmore, Chief Creative Officer of Tribeca Enterprises. “Some Velvet Morning is a thought-provoking and emotional ride that culminates in a gray, open-ended space, but its complexities do not overwhelm Stanley Tucci and Alice Eve’s electrifying performances, or LaBute’s acute sense of storytelling.”

“I feel so lucky to have Some Velvet Morning in the hands of Tribeca Film,” said Neil LaBute. “Geoff Gilmore and his team have been a great believer in my work and it's a real blessing to have this film given the care it deserves in the marketplace by such a fine company like Tribeca. I hope this is the beginning of a long association.”

The film will be released beginning December 10, 2013 on cable/telco and satellite video-on-demand platforms, as well as iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly, VUDU, Playstation, and Google Play, followed by a theatrical release beginning on December 13, 2013.

Breaking Glass Pictures Shatters Film Reality, Unleash 4 Dead Girls: The Soul Taker

As an independent writer, it gives me great happiness to see cool indie film shatter perceptions about subject matter. Breaking Glass Pictures is absolutely amazing with their variety of films in the current release schedule. The films range from Gay/Lesbian Drama, action, to independent to underground foreign films, and of course HORROR, just in time for Halloween!

In Time for Halloween Comes 4 Dead Girls:

Philadelphia PA - Breaking Glass Pictures and Vicious Circle Films are thrilled to announce the October 8th DVD release of 4 Dead Girls: The Soul Taker, arriving on home video in time for the Halloween season.  Co-written and directed by Mike Campbell and Todd Johnson, 4 Dead Girls: The Soul Taker offers an exciting new take on the genre staple of beautiful young women (Katherine Browning, Leah Verrill, Ashley Love, Tiffany S. Walker) fighting for their lives against dark forces.

Lily (Browning), her best friend Bianca (Walker), sister Lori (Love), and Lori's lover Pam (Verrill) move into their first off campus house together. The antics and the tempers run high. What they don't know is that the owner is a Nalusa Chito - a soul taker - who eats the souls of evil women. And he has locked them in the house. For the girls, it is a battle to the death because only the innocent can kill him.  Paying the rent has never been so deadly.

Ambushed Movie Review

Above Pic: Poster from IMDB

Any time Dolph Lundgren is in a film expect full on action, throw in Randy Couture and boom even more action! Interestingly enough, the focus of Ambush is actually about two small time drug peddlers Vincent (Vinnie Jones) and Eddie (Gianni Capaldi) Seems like these two gentlemen, and I use the term very loosely, want to move up from small time, will stop at nothing to get there, including murdering their competition.

Randy Couture plays a crooked detective named Jack dead set inn retiring to Costa Rica all the while muscling in on the drug business. Dolph plays a straight laced DEA agent named Maxwell, he suspects that Jack is dirty, but must build his case against him.

What we have in Ambushed are two distinct plots, that should have been made into two separate films. Either plot could have made a decent film. Ambushed tries to shoehorn in too much, never staying with one plot long enough to maintain full interest.

Above Pic (C) 2013 Voltage Pictures  , Dan's Movie Report Screen.

That being said, Dolph ages gracefully, making the difficult transition to playing more hardened experienced characters, Dolph the action star has morphed to Dolph the mentor. Lately his characters have been given more depth, more meat to chew on, and more speaking lines. As a writer, who has followed and viewed almost every picture he was in since View to A Kill, I welcome this transition. Dolph seems to be as comfortable in speaking parts now. as he was with the action in the 80s.

Without getting to side tracked here, Ambushed is a decent film, perhaps a bit muddled down, by the dueling plot lines, but the action and interplay between Vincent and Eddie make for a fun 90 minutes. I rate Ambushed a 6.5 out of 10 worthy of a rent!

Film is available November 12th on Amazon!
